Pretending with Little Bear

Ideas for Use
Preservice Education

This video of a first grade classroom is a student teacher favorite. Early in their student teaching, teacher credential candidates are eager to discover the elements of effective lesson design. They especially want to see what an effective lesson looks like in action. The teacher in this video demonstrates a powerful lesson anticipatory set. She uses her own childhood experience and realia (paper dolls) to connect with the children personally as she kicks off a literature and writing lesson. Student teachers never forget the response from her students. This video demonstrates how the teacher encourages and supports student collaboration in all phases of the lesson. Again, it demonstrates strong content expectations as well as social collaborative ones. The lesson reflection time allows for student sharing of big ideas, and the process of learning--what went well and why, as well as, challenges and how they were addressed.
