What Did Jamaica Find?

In the book, Jamaica’s Find by Janita Havill and Anne Sibley O’Brian, a young girl finds a pretty doll in the park, takes it home intending to keep it, and is led by her mother’s questions to return the doll to the park’s lost and found where she finds the doll’s owner looking for the doll. After reading the book aloud, a first grade teacher leads her class in a discussion of the book, the main character’s feelings, their motivations, and whether it is ever okay to keep something that you find. The students seriously grapple with the moral issue of the book displaying empathy and different levels of moral understanding.
