Victor A. Battistich Memorial Graduate Award
Victor A. Battistich, PhD: Prior to joining the Division of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at UM-St. Louis in 2003, he co-founded and was senior researcher at the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, CA and was well known for his work in the field of character education. Vic’s entire career was dedicated to understanding how schools might create the kinds of environments that would nurture the competencies and values that children need to become a force of good in the world. He was internationally recognized for his expertise in the areas of character education and prosocial development as well as for his work in research design and program evaluation. Vic’s scientific work encompassed several related fields: character education, substance abuse prevention, school sociology, delinquency prevention, and moral development. He was the author or co-author of over 60 professional publications. Vic was also a founding member of the Center for Character and Citizenship at UMSL. While Vic passed away June 30, 2008, he is still greatly missed.
In 2008, the Center for Character and Citizenship established the Victor A. Battistich Memorial Graduate Award. Each year the Center accepts nominations for the award from faculty, staff and UMSL graduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Recipient must be a UMSL graduate student.
- Recipient must be enrolled full time in the field of Education, Psychology or other related area.
- Preference shall be given to a student who exhibits high quality work in Dr. Battistich’s various areas of interest, which include character education, school climate, prosocial development, prevention science, democratic values in education, and program evaluation of character or other positive youth development education programs.
The recipient is presented with a plaque and a $500 award to be used toward tuition at University of Missouri-St. Louis. Nominations may be submitted through our website form or mailed to the Center for Character & Citizenship at UMSL, 469 Marillac Hall, St. Louis, Missouri 63121.
