The Sanford McDonnell Fellowship Award is presented to an outstanding UMSL doctoral student whose field of study focuses on Character Education or a relevant topic.

The recipient will receive a $1,500 award to be used toward tuition at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

ADOLPH AND CAROL FRANK SCHOLARSHIP

The Adolph and Carl Frank Scholarship is awarded to graduate students at the University of Missouri - St. Louis College of Education who demonstrate excellence in their studies and work in the field of Character Education.

The recipient will receive a $1,500 award to be used toward tuition at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

Victor A. Battistich Memorial Graduate Award

Victor A. Battistich

Victor A. Battistich, PhD:  Prior to joining the Division of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at UM-St. Louis in 2003, he co-founded and was senior researcher at the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, CA and was well known for his work in the field of character education. Vic’s entire career was dedicated to understanding how schools might create the kinds of environments that would nurture the competencies and values that children need to become a force of good in the world.  He was internationally recognized for his expertise in the areas of character education and prosocial development as well as for his work in research design and program evaluation.  Vic’s scientific work encompassed several related fields:  character education, substance abuse prevention, school sociology, delinquency prevention, and moral development.  He was the author or co-author of over 60 professional publications.  Vic was also a founding member of the Center for Character and Citizenship at UMSL.  While Vic passed away June 30, 2008, he is still greatly missed. “A large part of his passion and motivation for his work came from his genuine desire to improve the common good.” Click here to read Dr. Berkowitz’s tribute to Victor.

In 2008, the Center for Character and Citizenship established the Victor A. Battistich Memorial Graduate Award. Each year the Center accepts nominations for the award from faculty, staff and UMSL graduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • Recipient must be a UMSL graduate student.

  • Recipient must be enrolled full time in the field of Education, Psychology or other related area.

  • Preference shall be given to a student who exhibits high quality work in Dr. Battistich’s various areas of interest, which include character education, school climate, prosocial development, prevention science, democratic values in education, and program evaluation of character or other positive youth development education programs.

The recipient is presented with a $500 award to be used toward tuition at University of Missouri-St. Louis. 

Nominations, including self-nominations, must be received by the Center for Character and Citizenship by March 15 of each Year in order to be considered for the annual award. To apply for oneself or nominate others, fill out the nomination / application form and click submit.

David Gottlieb Citizenship Education Fellowship

APPLICATION DUE DATE MAY 31ST ANNUALLY | $1500 AWARD

This award was established in memory of the late David Gottlieb. The CCC accepts nominations for the scholarship from UMSL faculty and staff, practitioners and all interested persons knowledgeable about participatory citizenship education and education for democracy. Self-nominations are encouraged. To apply for oneself or nominate others, fill out the nomination / application form and click submit.

Criteria

The criteria for nomination, including self-nomination, are:

  • Recipient must be a UMSL graduate student.

  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the College of Education.

  • Recipient must demonstrate high quality work as an education practitioner that fits the focus on participatory citizenship in a democratic society. Fields of practice can be schools, school districts, or settings outside the traditional classroom that emphasize informal learning. 

The recipient will receive a $1,500 award to be used toward tuition at University of Missouri-St. Louis.

ccc student affiliate awards*

Provides up to $500 to current Graduate Student Affiliates. Applications may be submitted and will be considered on a rolling basis. Financial support may be used for activities associated with study, research, conferences, etc. such as:

  • publication reprint costs

  • research; e.g., supplies, photocopying, participant incentives

  • travel for presentation at a conference

  • transcriptions

  • tuition

  • other work supporting study in the areas of Character and Citizenship education

In order to request a student affiliate award, please complete the application for funding. The application will include the purpose of the request, relevance to the CCC mission, and budget justification.

* Awards are contingent on available funding. / Awards for conference expenses are contingent on papers being accepted. / Research-related activities involving human subjects must have IRB approval before funds will be distributed.
